I always get the question, "Is my pet eating too much?". A majority of the time, yes is the answer. I see this trend often because we like to free feed our pets and show them love in return for how happy they make us. There are some easy steps to figuring out if your pet is overweight. Here is a simple explanation from a nutritionist at The Ohio State University.

A special calling to cat owners, your pet needs exercise and diet monitoring too. Too many instances of cats having food left down all day leading to many problems including diabetes and arthritis that may be completely preventable. I can't blame them. If I were bored and stuck at home, I would sleep and eat too. So make sure to not make simple excuses. You can do simple things like only leaving down limited quantities of food to limit caloric intake.

Worried about cost of care and whether you can afford a necessary treatment? I am. Yes, I get a discount as an employee and I am still scared. So here is a little bit of my situation.

I have 2 kids (dogs) that are a big part of my life. I just recently got married (yeah!) and, like all of us, have debt.

So how do I cope with being able to pay for unexpected pet expenses?

Pet insurance.

People sometimes laugh when I tell them pet insurance is available and affordable. There are also many ways to get discounts (Ohio limits discounts on casualty insurance). Yes, I feel it is better than my health insurance. So here are some quick facts to make you aware of the situation:

1. You can visit any veterinarian.

You don't have to be in a network in order to apply your insurance.

2. You pay for services up front.

Yes, you pay for your visit whether it is $80 or $800. However, most insurance companies guarantee your reimbursement within 10 days.

3. Coverage varies by the company.

Every company has different stipulations and some include a benefit schedule (expected cost of treatment). Some have accident only insurance and wellness plans that cover routine visits. Some can run you as low as $10 a month!

4. Peace of mind
Nothing felt better when I was able to run the expensive, most specific test for one of my kids knowing that it was covered by my insurance. (By the way, it showed me the problem and quick).

(Just FYI, my youngest 2 year old is covered for up to $8,000 a year. My deductible is $200 per incident. So if my little boy broke a leg (he's clumsy like his dad) and needed surgery to repair the fracture, I would only pay $200. The rest would be covered by the insurance up to $8000. If this was to become a chronic problem or need for medication for the rest of his life, it would be covered. He has up to $8000 each year, not for the duration of the illness.)

Myth- Puppies should not go to puppy class until all vaccines are done.

All puppies, like infants, and are at higher risk of disease rather than adults. However, does the disease risk outweigh the benefit of puppy socialization? The true critical period for socialization is 4-14 weeks of age. Most vaccine protocols do not finish until 16 weeks. This is the conundrum. So here are my opinions on the matter:

-Socialize, socialize, ...and socialize. Puppy classes are great and cost effective. Be aware that puppy classes should be held indoor on a surface that can be sanitized and make sure puppy accidents get cleaned immediately during the class.

-Keep your puppy’s vaccines up to date. Vaccines are typically required every 3-4 weeks until 16-20 weeks of age.

-Visit friends/family with healthy children and vaccinated pets. A very easy and cheap option, but be sure to ask permission first and verify their pet’s socialization status.

-Save the dog parks until after puppy vaccines and socialization have been completed mainly because there are too many variables for you to control.

The goal for socialization is 100 interactions in 100 days. So socialize your puppy for a better adjusted dog but be aware of the environment. Proper socialization is the best way to ensure a well adjusted pet and an easier pet to handle in the future.

On Tuesday, the Ohio House of Representatives passed HB 14, calling for an end to tagging pit bulls as inherently vicious in state law. HB 14 would also create a new system of classifying aggressive dogs and holding owners more responsible for inappropriate actions of their canines.

So what does this mean?

It means from now on, we will classify a vicious dog by individual actions instead of how it looks. Great news and it also puts more emphasis on the owners for their training. Never stop training your dog because he is constantly trying to train you.

How to keep our pets healthy, and save you money!

Pet obesity and overweight pets are an enormous problem that affects 54% of the dog and cat population. We, as owners and caretakers, have the ability to dramatically decrease the obese pet population.

Our pets, like humans, are at an increased risk for disease when obese. Diseases like diabetes, kidney failure, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease are conditions with a direct correlation to overweight animals. These diseases decrease the quality and the length of our pets’ lives and lead to long term medical care. The risk to animals and the cost to clients are preventable by maintaining a healthy body weight for your pet!

FACT:
For a 20 pound dog, eating just one hot dog is the equivalent to a human eating 3 entire hamburgers and 2 whole chocolate bars.
Just one cup of milk for a 10 pound cat is the equivalent to a human eating 4 and 1/2 hamburgers and 5 whole chocolate bars.

As a veterinarian, I hear a lot of excuses from owners as to why their pet is overweight. I constantly hear that their pet is hungry all of the time or that they LOVE treats. (Many times it is not what it is but the fact that they are getting something.) Try some simple changes like veggies (carrots, green beans, etc.) as a treat or even use their kibble as a treat. Veggies are good because they have a high fiber content that makes your pet feel full. Just remember, the more treats you give the more you need to take out of their normal feedings regardless of what type of treat. Compliance is key; we need all of the family to be on board to keep your pet healthy. You may want to actually measure out the food that you feed on a daily basis. Your “cup” of food may not actually be a true cup. So be aware that you may be over-feeding your pet without even realizing it. If you have any doubts feel free to drop by the clinic and get a free measuring cup. By the way, don't forget the exercise!

How Do Dogs Get Heartworms?

Only one way has been found, an infected mosquito. Heartworm disease has been reported in all 50 states and only one bite from one infected mosquito will transfer enough larvae for your pet to develop heartworm disease. This disease takes 6 to 7 months for this larvae to mature to an adult heartworm. This in one reason why prevention is key.
Fact: Adult heartworms can grow up to 12 inches long, live up to 7 years, and can accumulate to over 250 individual worms!

Can people get heartworms from their dogs?

No. Heartworms are very rarely found in humans and do not complete the same life cycle as in our pets. They usually present as tumor-like lesions in the lungs. Also, heartworms are have only been found to be transmitted by an infected mosquito.

How do we prevent dogs from getting heartworms?

For less than the cost of your weekly coffee, you can prevent heartworm disease. There are a variety of forms of prevention including monthly pills, monthly topicals and longer acting injections.
Fact: The cost of treatment for a dog is extremely expensive and the injections are extremely painful. Unfortunately for cats, no safe treatment has been developed. Yet another reason why prevention is key.

How do I tell if my dog has heartworms?

A simple blood test from your veterinarian can be diagnostic and these tests are very accurate. Initially, you will not see any symptoms of heartworm disease, but as more worms develop and grow, they crowd the heart. They can damage the valves of the heart and, over time,cause a cough to develop. Our pets may begin to shorten their walks and get worn out very quickly. In the advanced stages, dogs may pass out, have poor circulation, and develop further lung problems.
Fact: Most dogs will die if they are not treated.

How do I tell if my cat has heartworms?

These signs are not as obvious as their canine counterparts. Coughing may occur with or without further breathing issues. There are blood tests for screening cats but the most accurate tests are typically processed through an outside lab. With cats, heart disease is not as prevalent as lung disease. This is primarily due to the small amount of heartworms that usually develop in the heart chambers. Again, there is no safe treatment of heartworm disease for cats.
Fact: Feline heartworm disease have been found in many cases that appear as a stroke in cats.

Can I skip giving my dog his preventative during colder months?

It takes 6 to 7 months for this larvae to mature to an adult heartworm. This means that if you stop prevention in October with an infected mosquito haven bitten your dog, spring comes and your pet may now have acquired heartworm disease. Another good reason is the human aspect. When we give something once a month, we are much more likely to not forget to give the medication. Missing one month may not be an issue, but missing two months could allow your dog to become infected to the point that the preventative medication does not clear the infection. Year-round prevention is still recommended by The American Heartworm Society.

Over the Counter Medications- Safe or not?

CAN I GIVE HIM ONE OF MY PILLS DOC?

A big concern to me as a veterinarian is Over-The-Counter (OTC) treatments and medications. For example, since some topical medications went OTC, the reports for adverse reactions have went through the roof. Why? Mostly because of overdosage or improper application. However, OTC medications and supplements have a large benefit too and not just for cost reasons (although most medication becomes more expensive when it goes OTC). I recommend alot of OTC medications for certain conditions. It is the dosing and side effects that make these OTC medications scary. Reality is, call your vet before giving any medication to make sure there are no major long term side effects.

Another warning to throw your way is aspirin and some forms of "doggy" aspirin at petstores. This is commonly given because people think their animal is in pain and can just give them a dose. It is not that simple. While this medication has its uses, especially in human medicine, it may have a severe long term effect and can cause serious side effects by changing the body and the blood's chemical composition. It may also complicate and prevent further necessary treatment if the original problem does not resolve. So make sure your vet is aware of what you medicated your pet with and think twice before giving it one of your pills. By the way, never give Ibuprofen, Aleve (naproxen), or Tylenol (acetominophen) without consulting your veterinarian as some of these may be deadly.

Socialization, Training, and Wellness Exams = A Great Owner and a Better Pet!

What exactly is socialization, and why is it so important?

The importance of proper socialization programs continues to be on the forefront of puppy and kitten behavior. Early prevention of behavioral problems, starting with appropriate socialization, is far better than patient rehabilitation and/or medical intervention later on.

Socialization is the introducing and familiarizing a puppy or kitten to new experiences -- including people, places, objects and other animals -- in ways that help the youngster learn how to respond and interact with these experiences appropriately and without fear. A properly socialized puppy or kitten is well-adjusted and makes a great companion. Unfortunately this critical socialization window is short-lived; approximately 4 to 12 weeks for puppies, and 4 to 14 weeks for kittens.

Should young pets be vaccinated before socialization?

Vaccine schedules should not interfere with a socialization program nor should socialization interfere with a young pet's vaccination schedule.

Unfortunately, many puppies and kittens are not completely protected from infectious diseases until the series of vaccines are completed at 12 to 16 weeks of age. Therefore exposure to other puppies and kittens as part of the routine socialization program carries some significant risks. Conversely, waiting until the vaccine series is complete before starting any socialization with other youngsters or adults misses the narrow "socialization window," (4 to 12 weeks of age for puppies, and 4 to 14 weeks for kittens).

To be safe, the best recommendation is to avoid exposing young puppies or kittens to any strange pets and to avoid areas where sick animals could have been (for example, parks, walking trails, dog parks or school playgrounds). To minimize the health risk and still successfully expose your puppy or kitten to new animals, your veterinarian can recommend specific "puppy/kitten classes" where all of the puppies' and kittens' vaccinations are up-to-date and the activity environment relatively free of infectious diseases.

What are some of the common myths related to poor puppy and kitten behavior?

 The "socialization window" can easily be overcome with lots of love, patience and fortitude later on.

 Genetics has little to do with a dog or cat's behavior.

 Puppies respond best to harsh discipline (for example, spanking with a rolled up newspaper).

 Cats are very independent so you can't train a kitten.

How does a first-time patient visit for a puppy or kitten differ from a wellness checkup?

The first-time visit encapsulates all the important components of the first 4 to 6 months in the life of a puppy or kitten, such as preventive health care program schedules, specific dietary recommendations, outlining an appropriate socialization program suggestions, spay/neuter discussions, bathing/grooming plans, house training/litter-box tips, etc.

A wellness check-up is just that ... a routine scheduled appointment to review and assess the patient's health (wellness) at that point in time. That overall health assessment is based on any history of a problem or owner's concern, a complete physical examination, plus appropriate diagnostics for any problem identified.

In addition, the wellness check-up will also include any scheduled routine preventive health measures (vaccines, fecal examination, deworming, flea prevention, etc.).

DENTAL DISEASE: More Than Just BAD Breath??

Tartar is harmful to your pet in two ways. First, it is a storage unit where bacteria can reside and multiply in the mouth. Research shows us that bacteria from tartar are absorbed into the blood stream and deposited in various organs such as the heart and kidney. These two organs have no regenerative properties so their health is crucial. Second, tartar builds up along the gum line. As the tartar enlarges, it pushes the gums away from the roots of the teeth and allows bacteria to invade the tissue. Eventually, the teeth will loosen and fall out. Many owners do not recognize the pain caused by this tooth loss.

Dental procedures are noninvasive procedures that may lengthen and improve your pet’s life. Here is a recent example, a senior dog came into the clinic for dental cleaning and extractions were expected. There were 14 extractions needed. The dog did well with no problems. Two months later, the dog gained 20 pounds!!!!! All due to the fact that he was able to eat comfortably. Of course, now he is on a diet.

Which pet is the Alpha? Maybe there isn't one!!!

For years we have heard of the "alpha" dog. This is the one who makes all the decisions, gets the food first, and leads the pack. The "alpha" dog theory was first established in 1949 by Lorenz. His observations were not incorrect by any means but the results may have been influenced by training style.

Today our pets do more than they ever have with us. They travel in cars and planes with us, jump over agility hurdles, catch balls in the air, sleep in our beds and protect our children. In 1949, I doubt that many dogs (primarily German Shepherds) slept in beds. I also doubt that the training method was clicker training or that positive behavior modification was used. So the "alpha" may be caused by humans through dominance training. In my personal life I can see that my Min Pin has her say but the Whippet will take the lead at times. Let's face it, a Miniature Pinscher (King of the Terriers) will always be bossy. So I can personally see the roles they play are suited to their strengths. Wouldn't this fit with survival of the fittest? I will think about this as both my dogs cuddle up with me on those cold days.

Poinsettias! Toxic or Not?

Poinsettias Are Not Toxic

Despite years of education efforts, many consumers still mistakenly believe that the poinsettia plant is toxic to children and/or pets. This myth is often propagated by media stores during the winter holidays. Year after year SAF works very hard to dispel the long-standing myth regarding poinsettia toxicity.

The poinsettia is the most widely tested plant on the market, and research has proved the plant is not toxic:

* Scientific research from The Ohio State University has proved the poinsettia to be non-toxic to both humans and pets. All parts of the plant were tested, including the leaves and sap.

* According to POISINDEX, the national information center for poison control centers, a child would have to ingest 500-600 leaves in order to exceed the experimental doses that found no toxicity.

* A study by Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University found that out of 22,793 reported poinsettia exposures there was essentially no toxicity significance of any kind. The study used national data collected by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

* The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reports that keeping this plant out of the reach of pets to avoid stomach upset is a good idea, however pet owners need not fear the poinsettia and banish it from their homes for fear of a fatal exposure. The American Veterinary Medicine Association of America (AVMA), agrees.

As with any non-food product, however, the poinsettia is not meant to be eaten and can cause varying degrees of discomfort; therefore, the plant should be kept out of the reach of young children and curious pets.

Bring on the Cheer!

Dogs and cats make popular Christmas gifts, but make sure that you understand the commitment and whom you are giving it to. For example, giving a 5 year old a puppy is really giving a huge commitment to his/her parents.
Take the time to research which animal the person recieving the animal would like to have before going through with the purchase. Maybe a pocket pet fits their lifestyle the best. Make sure you discuss the breed and behavior of your new pet. Some breeds such as Miniature Pinschers require a large amount of mental stimulus. While a Whippet may just need 10 minutes of running a day. (These statements are from personal experience) If you are adopting or rescuing an animal, check to see if there is any medical history and how the dog has acted in the past. Is the new pet good with kids and other animals? All these should play a factor in your decision. This may even sway you to try a smaller pet such as Sugar Gliders or even rats!!! Some shelters will adopt out these pocket pets as well. You can try this one.

With any pet, cost of the the animal initially does not represent the actual cost over the year. Not only does a pet need food, licensing and other supplies, but the new owners need to be able to pay for veterinary costs and vaccinations let alone if something may arise with the animal’s health. When we purchased our last puppy, the actual cost of the dog was probably 1/4 the cost of the first year. The good news is that if you are concerned with accidents and illness, there are plenty of pet insurance companies that make it affordable to help out with those bills. This again takes a little research.

I always prefer my pets to be cuddled up in bed with me but I was raised where the animals were not allowed in the house (unless i would sneek them in). Sorry Mom. So if you plan on getting a new pet and keeping it outdoors, be sure to consider the pet's well-being. Dogs require a dog house and there must be straw or other bedding in the area of shelter for the animal to keep warm. This will help prevent frostbite to the ears and paws. You have to make sure the water bowl doesn't freeze as well. Pets can become dehydrated in the winter too.

I am not trying to scare you into not getting a pet by any means. Seems a little counterintuitive for a veterinarian. I just want you to enjoy your pet to the fullest no matter how small or large it may be.

It’s that time of the year again where we as a community need to come together and help those in need over the holiday season. Lebanon Small Animal Clinic is participating again this year in Warren County’s 5th Annual Food Drive, and is asking you for your help in collecting non-perishable foods.

You may bring your items to our drop-off barrel that has been placed in our lobby area.
The collection runs from November 1st through December 31st.

Items that are most urgently needed:

Tips to Try Before Declawing Your Cat.

People often ask me when to declaw their cat. Here is my two cents on the matter, avoid it if you can. Sounds funny coming from a veterinarian who makes money off of surgical procedures. Now, I do perform this procedure when requested but it is usually when the owner has tried alternatives.

When you perform a declaw it does not just remove their "nail", it removes the last 1/3 of their "finger" by cutting through a joint. The healing is usually fairly quick but their paws will be sore for a while just like when we get a hang nail. Pain medications are key during these times and especially the first 3 days.

So here are some suggestions to avoid declawing. Don't get me wrong, I would rather a responsible owner declaw a cat to keep it than to have it placed in a shelter or euthanized. So give the claws a try first, besides it will you save you (not me) money.

It’s time again for our annual Tricks for Treats Pet Costume Contest!

We want to see your pet dressed up! This is our second year doing this contest so we want to see more costumes! You can bring in a picture or bring your pet into the clinic dressed up so we can take a picture. Or if you can’t make it in you can e-mail the picture to us at tech@lebanonsac.com. At the end of the contest we will have three judges pick the favorite costume, and the winner will win a fun prize! All pictures will be posted on our TV in our lobby area.

This year we are also going to try something new. We want you to help pick a People’s Choice Winner. All you will have to do is fill out a ballot and place it in our box here in the lobby, OR you can visit our blog at http://lebanonsac.info/ and cast your votes there! The pet’s pictures will be posted on the clinic’s lobby TV or on our blog site. MIT and Cambridge, Massachusetts has teamed up to help you out. They have developed a new benefit to picking up after your dog. I am curious to see how the process works. I wonder how you place the sample. Are you able to use a plastic bag to pick up the power supply? Does diet play a role in power efficiency? Maybe I am digging too deep. But it sure is a cool idea and maybe more owners will be more willing to pick up after their dog as well. Feel free to check out the original article here.

This is not only true with me but also with other pet owners. HERE is an uplifting story that helped me realize how much we do need each other.

How to choose a kennel.

So you decided to go on vacation and the furry children (not humans) were not invited or don't prefer to go. How do you choose a kennel? Be careful not to relate cost to quality and make sure you know what is included and what will be charged. Here are some suggestions from a recent article to help you decide.

1. Be wary of any kennel that won't let you inspect its facilities unannounced during regular operating hours.

2. Check whether a dog has adequate space to run. It should be long enough for the dog to break into a short gallop and wide enough for the dog to wag its tail without hitting the sides. For example, for a midsize dog, four feet by 10 feet is probably adequate.

3. Be sure your pet will be protected from the sun, rain, cold and excessive heat.

4. Be sure animals are protected from one another and that there is proper fencing to keep your pet in and other animals out.

5. Be sure proper health protections are in place. The kennel should be clean and not excessively smelly; all pets should be required to have proof of proper vaccinations, and pets should be examined carefully at check-in for signs of disease or parasites, which could spread.

6. Size up the staff members: Do they answer your questions, show affection for the animals and are they available 24 hours a day?

7. Check what arrangements the kennel has for veterinary care, if needed.

8. When you pick up your pet at the end of its stay, carefully check its condition and behavior.

Home Remedy Skunk Formula

Here is a natural home remedy that has been effective in the past. Use it as needed so that you and your family can breath easily. Just think, no more tomato juice baths.

SKUNK FORMULA

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
¼ cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Liquid Soap

Mix all ingredients together in a container or bucket. Get pet wet and then pour solution on the entire body of the animal. Let the formula sit on your pet for 10 minutes then rinse. Repeat if needed.

**Do not make before hand, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda together can make a capped container explode**

There has been more and more Pet food concerns and voluntary recalls. Some medications are showing adverse events that have never been reported. If you have a concern, your input may help limit these situations. The government monitors these concerns and complaints through the HHS (Department of Human and Health Services). Ohio Livestock Care Initiative (2010) Pulled.

The Ohio Livestock Care Initiative (2010) has been pulled from the ballot by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The HSUS reached an agreement with the Farm Bureau and the Ohio Livestock Animal Care Standards Board. There are many biased sites out there trying to steer you either way.

Here is a local site giving you the press statements from government officials and the HSUS. With this withdrawal of petition, Ohioans will not be voting on any changes in November.

To our Lebanon Small Animal Clinic Family,

I am writing this letter to update you on some big changes for my wife and I. Anne has recently been awarded a Congressional Fellowship in Washington D.C. Her position begins in August, and with my position finishing in June we will take some time to visit family and friends before our big move. It is with excitement, but also some sadness that I take the next step in my career. It has been an honor to serve this special community over the last two years. The love which each of you gives to your pets is all the reason I will ever need to know I am exactly where I belong, doing exactly what I was meant to do. Thank you so much for trusting your loved ones in my care, and I hope I returned your trust with the highest quality of care and love. Ohio Livestock Care Initiative 2010

So here is the next ballot concerning animals and their welfare. I advise you to choose wisely in your decision. In 2009 we voted to create a board looking at all facets of livestock care and their involvment in the human food industry. They have met and 200,000 thousand were present to share their ideas and input. To be unbiased, I shall not promote or discredit the proposed intiative. Here is a site that does give some information.

Only have dogs and cats? Be aware that some of these ballots do affect you. Sometimes dogs and cats are considered livestock by legal definition.

Ida Juris Bennett Dog Park to open.

So the first dog park in Lebanon is a go. It plans to open by the end of the summer of this year. All of this possible because a widower knew of his wife's love for dogs. Here is a link for the story by the Dayton Daily News. This donation is getting national attention.

I would love to see the designs and plans. It is supposed to be pretty impressive. Maybe this can help us prevent pet obesity and behavior disorders. Keep on the lookout for the Ida Juris Bennett Dog Park to open.

We all have those times where our pets eat something, limp into the house, or gets a cut or bite. Not long ago my dog liked the taste of a large portion of some tasty dark chocolate. Yikes!! (She is fine by the way, but would do it again if given the chance.) The key factor.... hydrogen peroxide.

I have composed a list that may help you prevent some serious complications and may even save you some money. As always, call first if you are unsure of amounts or have other questions.

1. (513) 932-4181 ext. 1 This is the most important part of your first aid kit.
2. Gauze sponges/ bandage wrap
3. Adhesive tape
4. Non stick bandages (Telfa) and cloth or clean towels
5. Hydrogen peroxide
6. Activated charcoal capsules
7. Syringe without a needle for administering medication (Turkey baster)
8. Muzzle or restraining device/pet carrier
9. Stretcher (large towel or blanket)
10. Buffered aspirin (do not use until instructed) DO NOT USE ADVIL, IBUPROFEN OR TYLENOL AT ANY TIME
11. Antibiotic cream
12. Saline Eye Solution
13. Mild grease-cutting dishwashing liquid (for bathing after skin contamination)
14. A can of your pet’s favorite food

Hope that this helps prevent a major issue. It did for me.

Jet's First Fly Bite - Mayfly

Spring is definitely here. I can hear the birds and the weather is getting warmer. Rain is coming instead of snow. And of course with this brings insects. Fly bites are common for our pets and most are nothing to worry about. Keep an eye on those spots thought to make sure they do not get bigger or progress. Some flies can cause major irritation or it may not be a fly at all. Some snakes and spiders can cause major skin issues.

Some topicals help to repel insects to some extent and watch ears closely for fly bites. Don't forget that Heartworm Disease is spread by mosquitos! So, keep a close eye out for those flying critters!

Getting in shape for Summer.

I try to be a healthy person. I try to eat as healthy as I can but that doesn't mean that I don't scarf down chocolate chip cookies, my mother's famous "no-bake" cookies, my favorite Root Beer or have part (if not all) of a pizza.

Many people wait until warmer weather to start their dieting because they want to look good at the pool. I understand it is warmer and we all want to be outside but DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR PET!! They need exercise just like us and most like being outside just as much as we do.
Here is a DVD and website that may help you and your pets. ( I am partial to the website). Now, you can get ready for summer right along with your pet!

So with summer around the corner, here are some quick suggestions:

1. Use those cool mornings, warm afternoons, and nice evenings to walk your dog. A 5 minute walk is better than 5 minutes on the couch.

Low Fat Treats - These are Meaty!

2. If you give treats, of any kind, calculate that into the equation. Too many people give high calorie treats and do not realize the excess calories being given.

Here are some examples of treats not to give and why.

A 10 lb cat eats a cheddar cheese cube (1oz) - this would be the same as 3 1/2 hamburgers or 4 chocolate candy bars. For 20 lb dog this is equivalent to 2 1/2 hamburgers!

Grilling out this summer? One hotdog in a 20 lb dog is the same as 3 entire hamburgers!!

The most common healthy alternative that pets usually love.
Fresh carrots and frozen green beans. Easy, simple and cheap.

I know that summer is just around the corner. We are all defrosting from a cold and harsh winter in the Cincinnati area. Most of us can't wait to put on shorts and sandals, apply our flea and tick prevention to our pets, sit outside and have a summer barbecue, but you do realize that there were the good parts of winter. Cage anxiety-how tough it is.

So far my puppy has been great with hardly any behavior or training difficulties. It always happens on a trip or away from home doesn't it? Traveling to my parents house for the weekend and cage anxiety sets in one hour into the journey. Crying and cage biting occurs for the rest of the trip.

It was not car sickness just anxiety. The hardest part... not doing anything. That is what needs to be done and so I watched with sunglasses on through the rearview mirror with my heart breaking. Struggle through it even though it sucks.

Having 2 dogs of different heat tolerance is something new. My Min Pin loves the sun and the heat. She can't get enough and rarely overheats (like her Mumma). My Whippet, he is like his Dad. Gets too hot in a matter of seconds and doesn't really know it. (Got a headache from playing basketball in the sun). This reminds me. Don't leave the dogs in the car. When the sun is out, they don't stay in the car even with the windows open.
Temperatures increase dramatically within 5 minutes. Heat exhaustion is a serious emergency and needs to be treated immediately. So what to do in the immediate time period if you believe your pet has heat exhaustion? A cool bath (not cold) and then call me, or your veterinarian. This is an emergency. Don't take it lightly and don't forget about your cats too. They are just as susceptible, we just don't travel with them as much.
So, get the water ready and have it available for your pets. If you can't leave the AC on in your car, then don't leave your pet in the car. Best of all, enjoy the start of warm, sunny weather!

What vaccines are right for my pet?

People always ask, "What vaccines are best, what ones do their pets need, and how often?" Here is my answer... it depends. Every animal has different exposures and risks. My 2 dogs travel and have training at a local club, QCDTC. Many different dogs from all over travel here and that means, exposure. Therefore, they are pretty well vaccinated.

There are 2 vaccines for dogs and 2 for cats that I consider core vaccines and that every pet should have regardless of lifestyle. The first for both dogs and cats is Rabies. For dogs, it is required by law. For cats, it is not a legal obligation but cats are more likely to be infected and spread rabies than a dog. Go figure. I am not a politician or a lawmaker. Just make sure this vaccine gets done.

The other core vaccine for dogs is the "Distemper" (DA2PPV). This vaccine consists of 4 components, Distemper virus, Adenovirus 2 (hepatitis), Parainfluenza virus, and Parvo virus. Consider this one a yearly shot for now. New studies are trying to determine longer immunity. The verdict is still out. Leptosporosis is becoming relevant and is close to becoming a core vaccine, but that is a post for another time.

The other core vaccine for cats is FVRCPC. Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (a herpes virus), calici virus, panleukopenia virus and chlamydia are the components. Further research is now in progress to justify these as a longer duration of action. Personally, I have seen many cats relapse with clinical signs when there is lack of a yearly vaccine. At the present, I am not encouraging any longer than 1 year between FVRCP vaccines for cats.

Well there it is, my idea of vaccines and what I feel is right. I will try and stay away from lectures and protocol in the future but thought that I had to get one post in. If you have questions of exposure or risk for your dog, let me know. Remember, it is all related to you and your pets lifestyle, not me.

Just for your knowledge, some other vaccines are Lepto, Bordetella, Influenza, and Lyme. There are many more but those are the main ones for now.

In the Spring, There Be Puppies!

The weather is getting warmer, but not warm enough. Flowers are coming in and the grass is getting greener. Puppies are starting to show up. Adoptions, ads, online resources, and shelters are becoming evident.

Think before you leap to add the cute puppy in the window to your family!

Make sure the breed and activity level are right for you your situation. Make sure you have time for the training and attention s/he needs. I personally had this experience as I was looking for a dog. The original plan was Spring 2010. What happened?

He showed up in November. Yes, it was quicker than expected, but he had the qualities that fit my lifestyle (with tremendous help from my girlfriend).

Now what I have is a much bigger 6 month old puppy. And yes, we are still training him...

If he was always this sleepy, life would be easy.
